LEGAL CAPACITY BUILDING AMONG THE TEA PLANTATION LABOURERS

Legal Capacity Building Among The Tea Plantation Labourers In Assam” is a programme designed to create legal awareness and to strengthen legal capacity among the tea plantation labourers in various districts of Assam. Since January 1, 2005 over 15,000 tea plantation labourers have benefited from this unique programme. They have been informed of the various provisions of “Plantation Laborers Act 1951” and the rules framed there under by the Government of Assam. LCHR Resource Team has made about 600 visits and conducted over 560 sessions covering about 330 remote tea gardens in Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Darrang, Udalguri and Nagaon districts. From August 1, 2007 trainers have been equipped to train their own people in their areas. By the end of 2011 a network of over 700 leaders have been created and linked with thousands of tea plantation labourers to address their problems and to realize their rights through advocacy, lobbying and networking.
